Heute standen weitere Plantagen am Mississippi auf meinem Programm und die Fahrt nach Norden über das wunderschöne Natchez bis Port Gibson im Staat Mississippi.

Today on my program are more plantations at the Mississippi river and the drive towards the north along the wonderful Natchez to Port Gibson in the state Mississippi.

Nach einem südländischen Frühstück mit Grids (Maisbrei) und Omelette startete ich meinen Tag. Als erstes ging es wieder ein Stück zurück Richtung New Orleans zu einer anderen sehr schönen Plantage am Mississippi, der San Francisco Plantage. Die San Francisco Plantage ist ebenfalls eine alte Zuckerrohrplantage wie auch Oak Alley. Das Mansion wurde zwischen 1853 und 1855 durch den Plantagenbesitzer Edmond Bozonier Marmillion erbaut. Aus einigen Blickwinkeln gesehen, erscheint das Haus durch seine Form als grosser Schauferaddampfer. Kaum ein Jahr nach Fertigstellung des Hauses stirbt Edmond und Valsin, sein älstester Sohn kommt aus Europa zurück und muss die Plantage leiten. Er war mit Louise von Seybold aus München/Deutschland verheiratet und hatte 3 Töchter. Zusammen lebten sie in diesem Haus und leiteten die Plantage für die nächsten 15 Jahre. Nach dem Tod von Valsin, wechselte die Plantage mehrere Besitzer. Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts nach der grossen Flut von 1927 wurden die grosse Deichsysteme gebaut und der schöne Vorgarten des Anwesens ging verloren. Heute ist das Haus im nationalen Register für historische Plätze. Es hat 5 wunderschön bemalte Decken und besitzt sogar schon Wasserhähne, eine Dusche und ein WC mit Spülung. Natürlich nicht wie wir es im heutigen Sinne kennen, aber für damalige Verhältnisse ein grosser Fortschritt.

After a southern breakfast with grids (mush, made from corn) and omelette I started my day. First I drove a little bit back again towards New Orleans to another beautiful plantation at the Mississippi river, the San Francisco Plantation. It is an old sugar cane plantation too as Oak Alley. The mansion was built between 1853 and 1855 by plantation owner Edmond Bozonier Marmillion. From some angle of views the form of the house seems to be a big steamboat. Barely one year after finishing the house Edmond died and Valsin his oldest son came from Europe and had to lead the plantation. He was marreid with Louise von Seybold of Munich, Germany, and had three daughters. Together they lived at the home and ran the sugar plantation for the next fifteen years. After the dead of Valsin the plantation changed the owners a few times. At the beginning of the 20th century after the great flood of 1927 the government built the levee system and the beautiful garden of the mansion vanished. Today the building is on the National Register of Historic Places. It has 5 wonderful painted ceilings and even owns faucets, a shower and a toilet with flush. Off course not like we know it recently but for former conditions a big progress.

Mich haben die beiden Türme an den Seiten des Hauses weniger an die Schornsteine eines Schaufelraddampfers sondern mehr an 1001 Nacht erinnert.... Sieht irgendwie arabisch aus. Diese Türme gehörten zum Wassersystem des Hauses und spendeten das Wasser in Bad und Küche des Hauses. Hinter dem Haus stehen sogar noch 2 originale Sklavenhäuser, die man anschauen kann. Es ist auf jedenfall sehenswert :)

The 2 towers at the sides of the mansion don't remember me to the chimneys of a steamboat but to 1001 nights ... they are looking a bit arabic. Those towers belonged to the water system of the house and donated the bathromm and kitchen of the house water. Behind the mansion there are two original slave houses which you can visit. It is worth to see this plantation :)

Danach bin ich am Mississippi entlang wieder Richtung Westen gefahren und konnte von der Straße aus noch einige andere Plantagen sehen. Leider war es mir teilweise nicht möglich anzuhalten, um ein eigenes schönes Photo zu machen. Daher hier eine kleine Auswahl mit Bildern aus dem Internet, damit man ein Bild davon bekommt, wie schön aber doch vielfältig diese tollen Plantagenhäuser sind.

Afterwards I drove along the Mississippi river towards west and I could see some more plantations. Unfortunately I couldn't stop every time to make some pictures. That's why here are some pictures from internet, then you get an image how beautiful but also multifaceted those great plantation mansions are.

Ab hier macht der Mississippi eine Kurve Richtung Norden, der ich weiterhin folge. Ich passiere ungesehen Baton Rouge (bis auf das State Capitol, gibt es hier nichts weiter spannendes zu sehen) und fahre direkt weiter bis Natchez. Unterwegs verlasse ich den Staat Louisiana und komme nach Mississippi. :)

From here the Mississippi river makes a curve towards north which I am following. I pass Baton Rouge without stopping (up to the State Capitol there is nothing else interesting to see) and I am driving further to Natchez. On the way I am leaving Louisiana and entering Mississippi. :)

Hier kann ich auch ab und zu mal einen Blick auf den Fluss werfen.

In Natchez angekommen führt mein erster Weg mich zum Visitor Center. Ich lasse mir Kartenmaterial geben, wo die schönsten Punkte markiert sind und sehe auch, dass man hier Kutschfahrten machen kann. Toll, dachte ich :) Dann mach ich doch sowas! Also fahre ich zu der angegeben Adresse, musste aber feststellen, dass da niemand war und das Gebäude scheinbar auch verschlossen war....schade... :( wäre eine tolle Tour durch die alte Stadt gewesen. Aber naja...wofür hab ich denn das Kartenmaterial? Also setze ich mich ins Auto und fahre eine markierte Route auf der Karte ab, um die schönsten Antebellumhäuser in Natchez anzuschauen.

When I arrived in Natchez my first way was to the Visitor Center. They gave me some maps where the most beautiful points are flagged and I see that I can make a carriage tip. Great I thought :) Then I will do that! So i drove to the address but I had to find out that nobody has been there and the building was closed .... pitty .... :( Would have been a wonderful trip through the old city. But anyway... why do I have all those maps? I went back to my car and drove one flagged route from the map to see the most beautiful Antebellum houses in Natchez.

Antebellum ist der neoklassizistische Architekturstil, der charakteristisch für die Südstaaten der USA ist, besonders der 'alte' Süden aus der Zeit zwischen der Geburt der Staaten in der Amerikanischen Revolution und dem Start der Amerikanischen Bürgerkriege. Sie ist besonders charakterisiert durch neoklassizistische und wiederauflebende griechische Stile und ist hauptsächlich bei alten Plantagenhäusern und Herrenhäusern zu finden.

Antebellum architecture is the neoclassical architectural style characteristic of the Southern United States, especially the Old South, from after the birth of the United States in the American Revolution, to the start of the American Civil War. Antebellum architecture is especially characterized by neoclassical and Greek revival style plantation houses and mansions.

Danach fuhr ich weiter Richtung Port Gibson, wo ich die folgende Nacht verbringen wollte. Kurz vor Port Gibson stoppte ich aber noch bei den sogenannten Windsor Ruinen. Die Ruinen gehören zum grössten Antebellum Anwesen, dass im Staat Mississippi existierte und wurden schon für einige Filmproduktionen benutzt. Das Haus wurde zwischen 1859 und 1861 erbaut und brannte 1890 durch einen tragischen Unfall ab. Scheinbar hatte ein Gast seine noch glimmende Zigarette auf dem Balkon gelassen. Die Familie meinte, der Brand startete ca. 3 Uhr nachmittags. Am Abend war ein Dinner geplant, und die Familie war am Nachmittag in der Stadt, um die Post abzuholen. Beim zurück fahren sahen sie grosse Flammen aus dem Dach steigen. Das Feuer brannte vom Dach bis zum Grundstein alles nieder und machte es unmöglich es zu löschen. Das Haus wurde komplett zerstört bei diesem Brand. Die einzigen Überreste heute sind 23 gespenstische Säulen, ein paar Stücke aus China, ein Set von schmiedeeisernen Geländern und Stücke der Balustrade. In Filmen wie 'Raintree County' oder 'Ghosts of Mississippi' kann man diese Ruinen sehen.

Then I drove further towards Port Gibson where I wanted to sleep that night. Close to Port Gibson I stopped at the socalled Windsor Ruins. The ruins are from the biggest antebellum mansion ever existed in state Mississippi and is already used for some film productions. The mansion was built between 1859 and 1861 and burned down by an tragic accident in 1890. A guest left a lighted cigar on a balcony. The family said the fire started around 3:00 in the afternoon. Having planned a seated dinner, they had gone into town to pick up the mail. As they were riding back, they saw flames shooting through the shingled roof. The fire burned from top to bottom making it impossible to extinguish, and the house was completely destroyed in the conflagration. The only remnants today are 23 haunting columns, a few pieces of china, and a set of the wrought-iron stairs and portions of the balustrade. In movies like 'Raintree County' or 'Ghosts of Mississippi' you can see the ruins.

In Port Gibson angekommen, checke ich mich in meinem Bed&Breakfast ein, einem wunderschönen alten Antebellum Haus, alt eingerichtet, mit grossen Räumen. Die Eigentümer sind super freundlich und kochten mir sogleich noch ein Abendessen, damit ich nicht hungrig ins Bett musste. :) Mein Zimmer war super schön! Und auch das Haus hatte die typischen Balkone mit den griechischen Säulen. Es war perfekt :)

After arriving in Port Gibson I checked-in my Bed&Breakfast, a very beautiful old Antebellum house, old furnished, with big rooms. The owners are very kind and cooked a dinner for me that I don't need to go to bed hungry. :) My room was so beautiful! And the house had those typical balconies with the greeks columns. It was perfect :)
