Heute morgen sind wir mit dem Bus von New York City nach Washington DC gefahren. 4 Stunden hat die Fahrt gedauert, aber dann waren wir endlich da. Und als wenn uns der Wilde Westen mit seinem Wüstenklima schon erwarten würde, hatten wir hier heute schon 36 Grad Celsius!!! Unglaublich!!! 

Unser erster Gang war mal wieder Richtung Hotel. Da wir direkt im Anschluss eine Stadtrundfahrt gebucht hatten, fuhren wir mit dem Taxi dorthin, um das ganze etwas entspannter zu machen! Unser Zimmer war natürlich noch nicht fertig! Der Typ an der Rezeption meinte, es wäre momentan nur ein sehr kleines Zimmer fertig, dass wir bekommen könnten, wenn wir aber später wiederkämen, könnten wir ein grösseres haben! Also liessen wir unsere Koffer da und gingen erstmal auf Stadterkundungstour :D Immerhin wartete die Stadtrundfahrt auf uns!

This morning we took the bus from New York City to Washington DC. After a 4 hours ride we finally arrived. And as if the Wild West with its desert climate already expect us coming, we had already more than 36 degrees today! Unbelievable!
Our first task was to check-in in our hotel. We took a taxi because we had a citytrip directly afterwards and wanted to have it more relaxed. But our room wasn't ready yet. The man at the reception said there is only a very small room available at that moment, but if we come back later we could get a bigger room. So we let our baggage in the hotel and walked to the citytrip point. :D

und viele weitere Memorials :) Unsere Stadtführerin war eine kleine total liebe etwas ältere Dame, die uns mit typisch amerikanischem Humor die Stadt näher brachte! Es war eine sehr schöne Tour. An den wichtigsten Stellen hielt der Bus an und wir konnten Photos machen sowie den Geschichten der Stadt lauschen. Dazu haben wir uns natürlich immer wieder ein schattiges Plätzchen gesucht, denn die Sonne war krass erdrückend hier! Aber es gab kostenloses eisgekühltes Wasser zur Tour als Erfrischung :D

and many further Memorial :) Our guide was a very small and very nice, a bit older lady, who introduced us to the town with her typical american humor! It was a very nice tour! At the most important places the bus stopped and we could make some pictures and listening to the stories of the town. For that we were off course always searching for shadowed places because the sun was depressingly strong here! But the busdriver had always free iced water during the tour for a refreshment :D

 

Die Stadt selbst ist geprägt durch viele große alte Gebäude und breite Straßen. Man merkt, dass hier das Geld hinfließt und wir uns in der Hauptstadt befinden! Was hier auffällt, es gibt keine Wolkenkratzer wie in den anderen Millionenstädten der USA. Kein Gebäude darf hier höher sein darf als die Breite der angrenzenden Straße plus 6,1 Meter (wohl eher nicht höher als das Capitol! ;)). Nur 3 Gebäude fallen nicht unter diese Regel, da sie vor der Verabschiedung dieses Gesetzes schon standen oder geplant waren: Das Washington Monument, der Turm des Old Post Office und die Washington National Cathedral.

The City is affected by many big old buildings and wide streets. You can see that money comes here and that you are in the capital city. What catched my eyes... there are no skyscrapers at all like in other megacities in the US. No building is allowed to be taller than the width of the adjacent street plus 6,1m (likely not higher than the Capitol! ;))Only 3 building s are higher because they already have been standing/planned before that law: The Washington Monument, the tower of the old Post Office and the Washington National Cathedral.

Nach der Tour suchen wir uns noch ein kleines Restaurant und essen lecker Salat mit Steak, bevor es wieder zurück zum Hotel und damit zur nächsten Überraschung geht. 

After the tour we searched for a small restaurant to eat a delicious salad with steak, befor we went back to hotel and therefore to the next surprise.

Unser Hotel liegt im Business District, ein paar Straßen nördlich vom weißen Haus.  Der Rezeptionsbereich ist ganz nett mit Sofas und einem Fernseher, auch der Typ heute Mittag an der Rezeption schien ganz nett.... leider war er jetzt nicht mehr da, sondern ein Kollege von ihm. Wir checkten ein und was bekamen wir.... ein Minizimmer (vermutlich das, von dem der andere Kollege schon gesprochen hatte)!!! Wir können kaum unsere Koffer aufmachen, geschweige denn uns bewegen! Einer der Koffer liegt innen vor der Zimmertür, der einzige Platz, wo man ihn hätte öffnen können! Dafür bekamen wir die Tür nicht mehr auf und konnten nicht mehr durchs Zimmer laufen, weil damit der einzige Gang zugestellt war! Und das für stolze 140 Euro pro Nacht! :D Ein Schild an der Zimmertür zeigt die richtigen Preise, die man zahlt, wenn man das Hotel nicht über ein Angebot im Internet bucht! Ich glaube es waren 369 Dollar pro Nacht für 2 Personen!!! Ein Hammerpreis für dieses Minizimmer!!! :D Naja ... Hauptstadt halt! :) Der eigentliche Hammer kam aber dann noch am nächsten Morgen! Dieses Zimmer war inklusive Frühstück! Da wir gegen 6 Uhr schon das Hotel verlassen müssen, fragen wir extra noch am Abend nach, ob es möglich wäre, uns Früstück to go zu machen und es um 6:15 Uhr fertig zu haben, damit wir es einfach nur noch mitnehmen können. Es hiess, ja kein Problem! Am Morgen kam dann aber die Überraschung! Es gab weder ein fertiges Frühstück für uns noch irgendwelche Tüten, um es noch einzupacken. Der Typ von der Rezeption gab uns dann Kaffeefiltertüten zum befüllen mit Croissants etc.! Das war echt die Krönung! Und Deckel für die Kaffeebecher gabs auch nicht! Wir haben uns nur das nötigste eingepackt, damit wir nicht ganz ohne Frühstück blieben und gingen.... froh dieses Hotel hinter uns zu lassen :D

Our hotel is in the Business District, a few blocks northwards the White House. The reception area is very nice with sofas and a TV, also the man from midday was nice ... pitty he wasn't there anymore this evening, but another colleague. We checked in and what did we get? A miniroom (probably that room where the first guy was talking about and which we could get already at lunchtime)! We even couldn't open our luggages on the floor or we couldn't move. On of the luggages was lieing on the floor in front of the door, the only place where we could open it! But now the door was closed and also the bit place to move in the room. And all that for proudly 140 euro per night! A prospect at the wall showed the normal prices of that room...if you don't book it as an offer via internet. I think it was 369 dollar per night for 2 persons! Horrible price for that small room! :D Capital city..... :D But the biggest surprise was still waiting for us in the next morning! That room was inklusive breakfast! We had to leave at 06:15 in the morning so we asked for breakfast to go and that this should be ready at 06:15. No problem was the answer! But the next morning the surprise, there was neither a ready breakfast nor a bag to put it in. The man from the reception gave us coffee filter bags to fill with croissants! That was the crowning achievement! And there also haven't been caps for the coffee cups! We didn't pick more than what was absolutely necessary just to have a small breakfast and left .... happy to leave that hotel behind us! :D

Aber die Stadt war schön! :)
But the town is nice! :)
