San Francisco

Von Las Vegas gings mit dem Flugzeug nach San Francisco. Wir hatten jetzt 1,5 Tage Zeit, diese tolle Stadt zu erkunden.

San Francisco ist eine total schöne Stadt mit ihrem Flair, der Architektur, der Lage am Meer und der alten Cable Car!

Gestern nach Ankunft haben wir eine Stadtrundfahrt gemacht, um erstmal einen Überblick zu bekommen. Was uns sofort auffiel, hier ist es ein paar Grad kälter! Der Wind ist richtig unangenehm nach der Hitze der letzten Wochen. Wir haben nun lange Sachen an und frieren trotzdem noch ein bisschen. Die Stadtrundfahrt führt uns an die wichtigsten Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt: Die Golden Gate Bridge, die leider im Nebel verschwindet und wir nicht richtig sehen können,

San Francisco is a great city with its atmosphere, the architecture, the position at the ocean and the old cable car!

When we arrived yesterday we made a city trip to get an overview over the city. But what we could feel from beginning: the temperature was much colder here! The wind was really uncomfortable after the heat of the last weeks. We were wearing long cloth but still freezing a bit. The city trip leads us to the most important places in town: The Golden Gate Bridge, which we couldn't see because it was vanished in the fog,

Mitten in Chinatown ist übrigens unser Hotel (Grant Plaza)! Es ist total nett hier! Da wir bei der Stadtrundfahrt niemanden erreichen konnten zwecks Abholung am Hotel, hat der Typ von der Rezeption dort für uns angerufen und alles geregelt. Und jede weitere Frage, die wir hatten, wurde sehr freundlich beantwortet. Der Service ist hier klasse! Und gestern abend war es dann ganz cool in Chinatown zu sein! Wir haben gleich die Gelegenheit genutzt, um bei einem chinesischen Restaurant essen zu gehen! Es war total lecker!

In the middle of Chinatown was our hotel (Grant Plaza)! That's really nice! We couldn't reach someone from the city tour for the purchase of picking us up, so the man from the reception just called them and managed everything for us! Every further question we had, he answered very friendly! The service is great here! And it was really cool to be in Chinatown yesterday evening! We used the possibility to eat in a chinese restaurant! It was very delicious! :)

Die Insel Alcatraz

Heute ging's dann auf eigene Faust los. Vormittags haben wir eine Fähre nach Alcatraz genommen und dann ganze 4-5 Stunden die alte Gefängnisinsel erkundet, auf der unter anderem auch Al Capone gesessen hat. Ein Ranger gab uns eine kurze Führung und hat uns von den Fluchtversuchen dieses Gefängnisses erzählt. Insgesamt sind nur 5 Fluchtversuche gelungen, wobei man nicht von allen weiß, ob sie sicher auf's Festland gekommen sind, oder ob sie beim Versuch, die knapp 2 km nach San Francisco zu schwimmen, umgekommen sind. Die Wassertemperatur ist hier wohl das ganze Jahr über relativ niedrig und nach den 2 km kann man wohl seine Finger nicht mehr bewegen. Unser Ranger ist die Strecke wohl vor 5 Jahren einmal geschwommen und konnte seine Erfahrungen mit uns teilen. :) Ein Insasse hat es tatsächlich geschafft, im Dezember durch die Schwimmaktion zu fliehen. Er war aber zu schwach, um sich selbst aus dem Wasser zu ziehen, und wachte am nächsten Morgen auf der Krankenstation des Gefängnisses auf. Um aus den Zellen zu fliehen, haben manche Insassen ihre Lüftungsschächte mit Hilfe von Löffeln vergrößert und sind dann da durch gekrochen. Ein anderer hat sich eine Uniform ergattert und hat eins der Wäschereiboote ergaunert, um als zurückkehrender 2. Weltkrieg-Offizier nach San Francisco zu reisen. Pech nur, dass das Boot eine andere Route hatte und er so aufgeflogen ist. Auf jedenfall war das Gefängnis einer der interessantesten Plätze der Stadt, die wir gesehen haben!

Today we explored the city on our own initiative. In the morning we took the ferry to Alcatraz and we explored the whole prison island in 4 to 5 hours on which amongst others Al Capone was jailed. A ranger gave us a short trip over the island and told us some stories about escape attemptions of this prison. In total there have been only 5 escape attemptions successful, although they don't know if the prisoners arrived save in San Francisco or if they died in the try to swim the 2 km. The water temperature is the whole year very cold and after this 2 km you even can't move your fingers. Our ranger swam this distance one time 5 years ago and could tell us from his experience :) One prisoner made it really to swim that distance in december and to escape! But he was even to weak to pull himself out of the water and woke up the next morning in the hospital ward of the prison again. To escape from the cells some prisoners made their air pits with aid of spoons bigger and crawled through it. Another one snatched an uniform and captured a laundry boat to return home as a 2nd world war officer. Bad luck that the boat had another route originally and his cover was blowed :) In any case the prison is one of the most interesting places we've seen in this city!
