Hoover Dam

Der Hoover Dam liegt genau an der Grenze von Arizona zu Nevada. Sein aufgestauter See ist der größte Stausee der USA und sorgt in Trockenzeiten für eine kontrollierte Wasserabgabe an verschiedene Staaten, in Regenzeiten wird das Wasser aufgefangen, um Überschwemmungen zu verhindern. Außerdem wird mit dem Damm elektrische Energie gewonnen, mit der einige Staaten versorgt werden. Wir sind bei 40 Grad über den Damm spaziert und standen direkt an der Grenze zwischen Arizona und Nevada. Normalerweise ist zwischen den beiden Staaten noch eine Stunde Zeitverschiebung. An beiden Seiten des Damms hängt jeweils eine Uhr mit der Zeitangabe des jeweiligen Staates. Wenn man dann den Damm überquert, ändert sich die Uhrzeit. Leider stellt Arizona auf Sommerzeit um, so dass momentan keine Zeitverschiebung da ist :-)  Aber lustig ist es trotzdem.

Das einzig negative daran: Das Parkhaus direkt am Damm für Touristen kostet 8 Dollar! Egal wie lang man da ist. Wenn man vorhat, den ganzen Tag zu bleiben (soviel kann man da gar nicht anschauen!), dann mag das ja ok sein, aber für die meisten ist der Damm nur ein kurzer Stop auf der Durchreise und das Parkhaus damit ziemlich überteuert! Leider hat man nicht viele andere Möglichkeiten, möglichst nah am Damm zu parken.... ausser man möchte einen Kilometer oder weiter laufen! 

The Hoover Dam is situated directly at the border between Arizona and Nevada. Its retained lake is the biggest retaining lake of the USA. It cares about  a controlled water delivery in dry seasons to different states and in rainy seasons it prevents flooding events through collecting the rain. Besides they win electricty with the dam with which may states are supplied.

We walked over the dam at nearly 40 degrees and were standing at the border between Arizona and Nevada. Normally there is also a time difference of 1 hour. At both sides of the dam there are towers with clocks which are showing the actual time of the states. so if you cross the dam the time is changing normally. Pitty that Arizona has summertime, so there was no time difference :) But it was funny!

The only negative thing: The parking house directly at the dam (for tourists) costs 8 dollars! It doens`t matter how long you stay. If you stay a whole day (I don`t know what you wanna look for the whole day there!) then maybe it is ok. But for most of people the dam is just a short stop on their journey through and then the parking house is to expensive! Pitty that there are nearly no other possibilities to park very nearly to the dam .... except you are willing to walk 1 km longer!

 Grenze Arizona - Nevada

Las Vegas

Danach sind wir in Las Vegas angekommen, dass übrigens nur wegen des Damms entstanden ist. Der Damm wurde in den 30er Jahren gebaut und nur unweit vom Damm entfernt wohnten damals die Arbeiter in Boulder City. In dieser Zeit entstand Las Vegas als Vergnügungsstadt nah bei Boulder City, wo die Arbeiter nach ihrer Arbeit hingingen.

Afterwards we arrived in Las Vegas which was originally founded only because of the dam. The dam was built in the 30s and not far away the workers were living in Boulder City. In this time Las Vegas was founded as amusement center where the workers were going to after work.

Las Vegas ist schon toll! Es ist bei Tag schon schön über den Las Vegas Boulevard zu schlendern und sich die vielen tollen Hotels an zu schauen. Vorallem da die Hotels meist ein Thema verdeutlichen. Ein Hotel sieht aus wie die Skyline von Manhattan,

und und und .... Wir waren, solange es noch hell war, shoppen und sind den Boulevard schon einmal abgelaufen. Wir haben uns sprichwörtlich die Füße wund gelaufen.... nach 7 Stunden hatte ich dann einfach keine Lust und keine Kraft mehr :-)  Dazu kam eine Erkältung, die ich mir durch die ganzen Klimaanlagen zugezogen hab.

and, and, and .... We have been, as long as it was light, shoppen and walked over the Boulevard. We got footsore proverbly ... but after 7 hours I didn't had fun and no strength anymore :) In addition I had a cold from all the air conditioners.

Aber nach einem ausgiebigen Dinner vom Buffet sind wir im Dunkeln trotzdem nochmal los und haben ein paar der Hotels angeschaut. Las Vegas MUSS man ja einfach bei Nacht gesehen haben!

After an extensive dinner we were going outside again in the dark and were watching different hotels. In Las Vegas it`s a must to go outside in the night!

Und natürlich die Spielhöllen! Egal, wo man reinging.... überall standen Spielautomaten, waren Spieltische... selbst noch im Flughafen! Nach dem Motto, wer bis jetzt noch nicht gespielt hat, hat hier seine letzte Chance (oder es ist eben das erste, was man tut, wenn man in Las Vegas landet) :-) 

Durch meine Erkältung fand ich den Tag super anstrengend, aber wir haben wieder eine Menge erlebt und gesehen!

And off course all the gambling houses! It doesn`t matter where you are going inside ... everywhere are standing slot machines and gambling tables ... even at the airport ... themed: who didn`t play until now have his last chance here (or it is the first what he does, when he lands in Las Vegas) :)
Due to my cold I found that day super strenuous, but we`ve seen and experienced a lot!

Route 66, Skywalk at Grand Canyon West

Heute sind wir einen Teil der historischen Route 66 gefahren. Man merkt, dass diese Straße kaum noch benutzt wird. Es sind kaum Autos unterwegs ... Nur ein paar Touristen wie wir und Anwohner aus den anliegenden Dörfern. Durch den Bau der großen Interstate um die Ecke hat sich der Verkehr verlagert.

Today we drove a bit from the historical Route 66. We could see, that this road isn`used a lot anymore... there have been rarely cars on the way .... only a few tourists as we are and some inhabitants who are living there in the adjacent villages. Due to the construction of the big interstate round the corner, the traffic is displaced.

 

Wir halten in Seligman, der Geburtsstadt der berühmten Route 66. Es ist ein kleines, verschlafenes Nest, dass nur noch von den paar Touristen lebt, die hier anhalten. Ein paar Restaurants, ein paar Souvenirshops.... das wars. Jede Menge Schilder und ein paar alte, halb verrostete Autos erinnern noch an die einst viel benutzte Strasse. Die Route 66 war die erste Ost-West Verbindung. Farmer und solche, die ihr Glück suchten, benutzten sie einst, um nach Westen zu kommen und ein neues Leben zu beginnen.

We stopped in Seligman, the native town of the Route 66. It`s a small sleepy village which lives only from tourists who are stopping here. A few restaurants, a few souvenir shops ... that`s it. A lot of signs and a few old rusted cars let remember at the in one time very much used road. The Route 66 was the first east-west connection. Farmers and such who searched for their luck, used it formerly to come to the west and to start a new life.

Das Ziel unserer Fahrt war das Hualapai Indianer Reservat am Grand Canyon West mit dem berühmten Skywalk, einer gläsernen Plattform ca. 1200 Meter über dem Abgrund. Auf der Fahrt dahin haben wir etliche Staubteufel in der Landschaft gesehen. Ich kannte sowas ja bisher nur von Bildern und hätte nie gedacht, dass ich sowas mal in echt sehe! :D Aber das war irgendwie schon spektakulär! Vorallem weil einer von denen direkt vor uns die Strasse überquert hat!

Neben dem Skywalk, einem Mini-Indianerdorf (2 Hütten, wo ein bisschen was rumstand) und einer Westernranch bot das Reservat noch 2 andere Viewpoints, von denen einer Guano Point hieß, was soviel wie Kacke heißt. :)

The goal of our daily tour was the Hualapai Indian Reserve at the Grand Canyon West with the famous skywalk, a glassy platform in round 1200 meters height. On the way we`ve seen a lot of dust devils in the landscape. I knew these only from pictures and never expected to see them in real one time! :D It was spectacular! Especially when one of them crossed the street directly in front of us!

Beside the skywalk, a mini indian village (2 huts where a bit stuff was standing around) and a western ranch, the indian reserve offered just 2 other viewpoints from which one was called Guano Point.... it means SHIT :D

Die Erklärung dafür bot uns der Shuttlebusfahrer. An diesem Aussichtspunkt fand man eine sehr große Fledermauspopulation in einer Höhle und mit dazu jede Menge Fledermauskacke, die sich über die Jahrhunderte angesammelt hat. Die Kacke war für die Indianer wertvoll, weil sie als Dünger auf den Feldern benutzt wurde und in Frauen-Make-up verarbeitet wurde (na lecker.... solange das Zeug nicht in der heutigen Schminke ist :-) ). Für den Abbau der Kacke wurde sogar extra eine Seilbahn gebaut, deren Reste - halb zerfallen - heute noch dastehen. Dieser Guano Point bot einen atemberaubenden Blick auf den Colorado River. So nah am Fluss waren wir selbst am Grand Canyon Ost nicht!

Allein dieser Geschichte wegen und wegen des Ausblicks hat sich das schon wieder gelohnt :D

The explanation for this gave us the shuttle busdriver. At this viewpoint they found a very big bat colony in a cave and additionally a lot of bat shit which was accumulated for hundreds of years! The shit was valuable for the indians, because they used it as fertilizer on farms and in make-up for women (delicious.... I hope it isn`t anymore in our present make-up :)). For the mining of the shit they built a cable car where we still could see the rest - half fallen into ruin. The Guano Point offered a great view on the Colorado River. So near to the river we even haven`t been in Grand Canyon East! Only because of the story and the great view it was worth :D

Im großen und ganzen war dieser Tag eigentlich ganz nett und der Guano Point auch super interessant und toll, aber der ganze Rest war ziemlich stark kommerziell und überteuert. Der Eintritt inkl. Skywalk ist mit ca. 80 Dollar pro Person ziemlich teuer (im Vergleich Grand Canyon NP 25 pro Auto!). Auf den Skywalk durfte man nichts mitnehmen, auch keine Kameras. Indianer haben Fotos gemacht, die man dann aber für 30 Dollar das Stück (!) kaufen konnte. Außerdem wurde man ständig verscheucht, weil die Indianer ihre Fotos machen wollten. Auf der Ranch war nichts los.

Generally speaken the day was nice and the Guano Point super interesting, but the rest was very commercially and over-priced. The entrance fee including skywalk is with 80 dollars per person relatively expensive (in comparison to Grand Canyon National Park 25 dollars per car!). It wasn`t allowed to take anything on the skywalk, also no cameras. Indians made pictures which we could buy for 30 dollars per photo (!). Furthermore we have been chased off the whole time because the indians wanted to make these pictures. On the ranch was nothing..... empty... no people, no attractions.

Es gab zwar diverse Unterhaltung wie Bogenschießen, Reiten oder Lassowerfen, aber es war keiner da, der einem das mal angeboten hat. Stattdessen sitzen die Angestellten eher gelangweilt irgendwo rum. Naja, aber die Ausblicke in den Canyon haben wir trotzdem genossen :-)

There was a bit amusement like archery, riding or throwing lasso, but there was nobody offering it. Instead the employees were sitting around bored. The views into he canyon we enjoyed anyway. :)

 

Allerdings ist mir noch was auf dem Skywalk passiert, was ich unbedingt erzählen muss. Sowas kann aber auch nur mir passieren :D

Als wir auf dem Skywalk waren, habe ich einfach nur geistesabwesend mit meiner linken Hand über meinen Hals streichen wollen. Da sticht mich doch so ne doofe Biene! So richtig heftig! Selbst der Giftsack hing dann noch inklusive Stachel an meinem Finger ... und das hat gebrannt wie Sau. Bin dann gleich zu einem der Indianer, der mir sofort was zum Stachel rausziehen und nen Desinfektionstuch gegeben hat. Der Finger ist immer noch dick, aber es geht mittlerweile wieder :-)

One thing happend on the skywalk which I must tell. This can only happen to me :D
When we have been on the skywalk I was running my hand over my neck. Suddenly such a stupid bee were pricking me. Even the poison bag inclusive the spike was still hanging on my finger ... ad it was burning a shit! I went directly to one of the indians who gave me something to pull out the spike and a desinfection cloth. The finger is still thick, but it is ok now :)

In Grand Canyon West gibts es neben der Ranch, die schon im Februar ausgebucht war, leider keine weiteren Unterkünfte. Deswegen mussten wir am Abend wieder zurück nach Kingman fahren, dem nächsten Ort mit Hotels. Aber dafür haben wir dann am nächsten Tag schon ein paar Kilometer gespart!

In Grand Canyon West there is nothing to sleep besides the ranch which was already full in february. Therefore we needed to drive back to Kingman the next town with hotels. But like this we saved some kilometers the next day!

Heute sind wir von Page nach Grand Canyon Village gefahren und haben uns den Grand Canyon angeschaut.

Die Fahrt war interessant, da sich auf dieser Strecke die Landschaft mehrmals drastisch verändert hat! Angefangen mit der Wüste bei Page, über Grasland bis hin zu Nadelbewaldung am Canyon. Im Grand Canyon National Park hab ich mich fast gefühlt wie in Mecklenburg Vorpommern mit dem sandigen Boden und den Nadelbäumen.

Schon auf dem Weg zum National Park konnte man auf einigen Strecken den Canyon von weitem sehen. Man konnte nicht rein schauen, aber man hat wohl gesehen, dass da ein riesiges langes Loch in der Landschaft ist, wo sich der hier noch enge Canyon befindet.

Tobi hat hier übrigens einen tollen Radiosender gefunden, der traditionelle Musik der Navajos spielt.... Das "Gejaule" haben wir dann die ganze Fahrt über angehört. Und als wir am Kassenhäuschen an der Einfahrt zum National Park standen, musste der Ami kräftig grinsen und lachen.... bestimmt wegen der Musik :D War ja auch komisch :D

Today we drove from Page to Grand Canyon Village and visited the Grand Canyon.

The drive was interesting because the landscape was changing a lot on the way! At the beginning there was the desert near Page, then grasslands coniferous woodland at the canyon. In the Grand Canyon National Park i felt a bit like I am back in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Germany with the sandy ground and the conifers.

On the way to the canyon we could already see it from the distance. We couldn`t look inside, but we saw well a big hole in the landscape (here was the canyon yet nauw!) :D

By the way, Tobi found a very cool radio channel with traditional indian music from the Navajos .... We heard this howling on the whole drive. When we arrived at the pay kiosk at the entrance of the National Park, the american man must love ... I think because of the crazy music :D It was weird :D

Zum Canyon kann man eigentlich nur wenig sagen: Grandios! Dieser Canyon hat einfach unbeschreibliche Ausmaße, die man so kaum erfassen kann. Wir sind mit dem Shuttlebus einen Viewpoint nach dem anderen abgefahren und haben einfach nur die Aussicht genossen. 

To the canyon I can`t say a lot: Grand! Great! This canyon has undescribable dimension, which we couldn`t catch at all. We took a shuttlebus from viewpoint to viewpoint and just enjoyed the fantastic views.

Das Grand Canyon Village ist zwar ein einziges Labyrinth, wenn man probiert, sich da mit dem Auto zurecht zu finden, aber ist auf jedenfall für eine Übernachtung zu empfehlen. Man ist halt direkt am Canyon und hat vom Hotelzimmer aus keine Anfahrten mehr. Wir waren in der Bright Angel Lodge. Nette Zimmer, nicht zu teuer, direkt am Canyon und ein Restaurant... wir wären gerne noch eine Nacht länger geblieben :-) 

Grand Canyon Village is a big labyrinth, if you try to orient yourself by car, but it is worth to sleep there. You are directly at the canyon and don`t need to walk to the canyon from your room. We have been in the Bright Angel Lodge. Nice room, not to expensive, directly at the canyon  and a restaurant ... we would like to stay longer for another night :)

Heute haben wir die lang ersehnte Phototour durch den Antelope Canyon gemacht. Der Canyon ist durch Sturzfluten enstanden, die immer noch regelmässig nach heftigen Regenfällen stattfinden, und hat sehr schöne rund geschliffene orangefarbene Wände, in denen noch die einzelnen Schichten des Sandsteins zu erkennen sind.

Wir haben gestern ja gerade so noch eine Tour zur Mittagsstunde ergattern können, die einzige Zeit, wo das Sonnenlicht an einigen Stellen senkrecht in den Canyon scheint und man einfach die schönsten Bilder machen kann. Es war die am stärksten frequentierte Zeit mit dementsprechend vielen Touris drin, aber es war trotzdem sehr schön! Der Canyon liegt im Navajoreservat und einer der Navajo-Indianer hat uns durch den Canyon geführt und die besten Stellen zum fotografieren gezeigt.

Today we made the long desired tour through the Antelope Canyon! The canyon was formed by flash floods which happens after heavy rain events, and has very beautiful round smoothed orange walls in which you can still see the single beds.

Yesterday we got this tour in the last second. The only time where the sunlight comes vertical into the canyon and when you can make the best pictures. Noon is the most frequented time with a lot of tourists, but it was still fine! The canyon is situated in the Navajo reserve and one of the Navajo indians showed us the canyon and the best spots to make a photo.

Sehr viel Zeit blieb uns leider nicht im Canyon.... das ist der Nachteil, wenn man eine geführte Tour machen muss. Aber wir haben den Canyon gesehen. Drinnen ist es übrigens total staubig und total mies für jede Kamera, da die Navajos immer den sehr feinen Sand in die Lichtbeams werfen für Photos. Egal, wo man stand oder hinschaute, kam der feine Staub auf die Kamera... oder auch in die Augen (man schaut ja auch oft nach oben!). Das war ein bisschen doof! Aber der Canyon ist total schön und wir sind froh, diese Tour bekommen zu haben.

Pitty, we hadn't much time ... that's the disadvantage if you make a guided tour. But we've seen the canyon :) By the way inside it is very dusty and horrible for every camera because the Navajos are throwing always the very fine sand into the lightbeams for nice pictures. It didn't matter where we were standing or looking to, the fine dust came onto the camera.... or in the eyes (we often looked above). That was a bit stupid! But the canyon was very beautiful and we are happy to get that tour! 

 

 

 

 

 

Lake Powell

Nach dieser Tour sind wir an den Hafen gefahren und haben eine Bootsfahrt auf dem Lake Powell gemacht. Eigentlich hatten wir uns vorher schon auf einem Prospekt einen Anbieter rausgesucht, haben diesen aber dann in der Marina nicht gefunden. Deswegen haben wir dann einfach eine andere Tour gemacht.

Bei der Bootsfahrt sind wir unter anderem in das untere Ende des Antelope Canyons gefahren, bis es mit dem Boot nicht mehr weiter ging und wir umdrehen mussten. Der Canyon verläuft sich direkt im Lake Powell und ist im unteren Ende dementspechend mit Seewasser gefüllt. Er ist hier schon relativ eng, und mit unserem Boot kamen wir nicht so weit.

After this tour we drove to the harbor to make a boat tour over Lake Powell. Actually we've already chosen a tour organizer for boat tours, but we didn't find him on the Marina. Therefore we've made another tour.

Amongst other things we've seen the end of the Antelope Canyon. The boat was driving into the canyon as far as it worked until we had to turn around. The canyon is going into Lake Powell and is filled with water at the end. It is relatively narrow here and we couldn't go so far with our boat.

 

Nur die kleineren Boote und Jetskis sind tiefer in den Canyon gefahren. Aber auch am Glen Canyon Staudamm sind wir mit dem Boot gewesen und haben ihn uns aus nächster Nähe angeschaut. Er ist übrigens die erste Staustufe für den Hoover Dam bei Las Vegas.

Only smaller boats and jetskis could driver deeper in the canyon. But we've also seen Glen Canyon Dam. By the way this is the first barrage for the big Hoover Dam near Las Vegas.

 

 

 

 

Horseshoe Bend

Den Sonnenuntergang haben wir uns dann noch am Horseshoe Bend angeschaut. Hier macht der Colorado River eine scharfe Kurve, fast schon einen Kreis und man kann vom Aussichtspunkt aus in 2 Täler gleichzeitig schauen. Man erwartet diese Tiefe erst gar nicht. Vom Parkplatz aus muss man erst einen guten Kilometer über eine Kuppel laufen. Man sieht zwar schon von weitem, dass das Tal vor einem liegt, aber man sieht eben nicht den Grund des Tals, sondern nur oben ein ganz kleines Stück. Und da das Tal relativ eng ist, sieht es von weitem nicht so gross und tief aus! Aber sobald man dann an die Kante tritt (die übrigens NICHT mit einem Zaun oder Seil oder dergleichen abgesichert ist!), verschlägts einem dann doch erstmal die Sprache! Man steht da direkt auf den Felsen an der Kante und meint, man könnte fliegen, so hoch ist das! Und der Ausblick ist einfach atemberaubend schön! Wir waren ca. 1 Stunde vor Sonnenuntergang dort, aber wir haben ihn abgewartet und einfach nur die Zeit da genossen!

For the sunset we went to the Horseshoe Bend. The Colorado River makes here a very sharp curve, almost a circle and you can look into 2 valleys. We didn't expect that depth. From the parking place we had to walk a good kilometer over something like a dome. We saw from the distance already that there is a valley, but we couldn't see the base of the valley. The valley didn't look very big or deep from the distance because it is very narrow! But as soon as we were standing at the edge (which is NOT saved with rope or fence!) words failed us! We were standing directly at the edge of this rock as if we could fly... it is sooo high! And the view is really impressively beautiful! We arrived ca. 1 hour before sunset, but we waited and enjoyed the time there!

Abends haben wir uns dann noch ein tolles Steakrestaurant gesucht.... aber statt Steak zu essen, haben wir uns für Suppe und Salat als "All you can eat!" entschieden :D Die Bedienung hat sich vermutlich kräftig verarscht gefühlt (ich denke mal, dass die Kombi als Vorspeise gedacht ist), blieb aber freundlich, und hat hinterher deswegen auch ein gutes Trinkgeld von uns bekommen :D

In the evening we found a nice steak restaurant .... but instead of steak we ate soup and salad as "all you can eat" ! :D The waitress definitely felt as if we were pulling her legs (I think this was actually a starter kombination), but stayed friendly and afterwards we gave her a good tip :D
