New Orleans

New Orleans

Heute ist mein New Orleans Tag :)
Today is my New Orleans day :)

But before I will start I am checking the weather news and I give Ginna a call, let's hope that I can sleep in her house next night.
Outside the sun is shining, so I assume that the tropical storm Karen is still not arrived. A short view in the news shows that storm Karen is weakened and should arrive saturday evening. The forecast of the way also changed and the storm should pass more in the south to the east. Let's see. It shouldn't be to bad :) I have an umbrella with me in any case. Just one disadvantage has this storm. My Jazz-Dinner-Cruise on Steamboat Natchez is cancelled which should be tonight :(

Naja, was solls. Diesmal werd ich es finden :D

Ginna confessed me that she gave me the wrong housenumber ... it was a typing error which she didn't see. Doesn't matter! This time I will find it :D

Also starte ich meinen ersten Tag.

So I am starting my day. On the search for a parking place where I didn't want to be to far away from the center I drove through very poor parts of New Orleans. The houses are really broken and you can still see very often the marks of the massive hurricane Katrina, the line at the walls up to which the water was standing during flood. It was awful to see this. And just two blocks further there are very nice and beautiful houses of richer people. Anyway I found a free parking place just 5 minutes walk from the French Quarter, so perfect :)

From Jackson Square on which are a lot of artists by the way, I started a walking tour through the French Quarter, along interesting buildings and through small alleys which has names as Pirates Alley. There are a lot of interesting stories about Pirates Alley and the pirate Jean Lafitte, who came at the beginning of the 19th century together with his crew to New Orleans. He lingered very often in Pirates Alley Cafe which exists since 150 years. And still tomorrow his ghost is haunting in Pirates Alley ;)

I could see street musicians, but also very beautiful architecture with those small balconies. I walked through French Quarter several times and landed finally in a cafe on the French Market. There I have eaten a real Po-Boy from New Orleans with alligator sausage and jazz live music. I didn't try alligator meat itself, so I can't confirm if the taste is really like chicken... if someone comes the idea to ask me. But the sausage has been a little bit sweet and very spicy, almost hot. It was delicious :)

In the afternoon I used the streetcars to drive through the CBD into the Garden District. There I also used the old St. Charles Streetcar. The Garden District is a wonderful neighbourhood with lots of old houses in southern style and much green. I walked through and took some nice pictures of a few houses.

Besides there is Lafayette Cemetery No 1, one of the oldest cemeteries of the town. Mark Twain called it "town of the dead", because the tombs in which they buried their dead are similar to houses, sometimes temples, from marble, with white roofs and gables, thousands on both side of the walks, reaching far away. That's how he has seen the cemetery. In real the cemetery is relatively small and the tombs where the dead are buried are more looking like big ovens - the coffins wher put in the tomb like a bread in the oven. That's why they are also called oventombs. And that's exactly what happend inside in the subtropical summerly heat of Louisiana. On natural way the dead were burned to ashes. And when the specified time of one year and one day expired in which no corpse should be disturbed, the tombs were opened, the rests of the dead were taken out, filled in a bag and put on the side. The old coffin were buried and they make space for a new one.

Considering storm Karen: During my walk through Garden District  the sky gets more and more clouded and at one point it started to rain. I had my umbrella with me but I could just  use it temporarily at the beginning and the end of the rain. The main part of the rain was so strong as if there is somebody in the sky emptying buckets... at that moment I remembered the tropical rainfalls in Ghana! The only thing I could do was to get out of the rain and to wait :p A Starbucks Coffee was a nice option! After one hour it stopped and I could continue my tour.

With St. Charles Streetcar I went back to the CBD and then back again to the French Quarter. The sun was already going down slowly and I wanted to make some pictures of steamboat Natchez before I will drive to Ginna.

This time I found Ginnas' home directly. The evening before I have been there just a few houses away. :D She welcomed me together with her daughter very lovely and even prepared the dinner already: broiled oysters with salad and rice. Since my apprenticeship where I had to sell and try raw oysters I feel disgust for them, but because I wanted to be polite I tried them. I realized that they are tasting different if they are broiled and much more better than raw :D After the meal I talked to Ginna. She is 65 years old, a tax accountant, she has a wonderful house in Gretna (on the other side of the Mississippi) and 2 big american house cats, a white one which ran away very shy all the time and a black and white one which I could hug :) Ginna is so lovely! She gave me some more tips what I could do on sunday and adviced me to drive over the bridge on lake Pontchartrain. She is working in the neighbourhood and could drive in front of me next morning that I will find it :)

Happy and footsored I fell to bed :D

One experience which I could make this day and which I never experienced in Europe before: People on the street were calling behind me or talking to me that they like my dreads. Really strange if people are talking to you every 10 minutes because of that :D Besides most of them are black, forming about 90% or more of the townsfolk of New Orleans. All of them were really nice and to some of them I talked. :)

Arrival in New Orleans

Ankunft in New Orleans
Arrival in New Orleans

Kalt!

After a loooong flight of around 9 hours I am landing safe and uneventfully in Atlanta/Georgia. Two hours later the connections goes further to Nashville/Tennessee and another hour later further to New Orleans/Louisiana. I landed around 08:00 pm local time in New Orleans at cuddly 90 degrees Fahrenheit and 95% humidity. And what's with Andrea? She is freezing! :p I am awake since 20 hours and totally overtired. I just need to pick up my rental car and drive to Ginna, my first couchsurfer :p By the way my rental car has been a cool runabout - a yellow small Fiat 500 :) The perfect car for me! Even my big luggage is fitting inside the trunk! Unbelievable! :D

I was driving to this address and ringed at the door, looking forward to get to know Ginna personally, where I just had email contact until now. A tremolous voice was asking: "Who is there?" Strange....didn't Ginna expect me? Same question again ... I had the feeling as if I am at the wrong address :D This woman opened the door and I explained her for whom I was searching. Unfortunately she didn't know Ginna .... but she told me there is another similar named road in the neighbourhood. I was driving to that road.... but there wasn't this housenumber .... In the meantime it was a quarter to 10 local time. It was dark, I was tired and I didn't have fun to search further for the right address .... So I drove to the next hotel, wrote an email to Ginna, where I am sleeping and if she can write me her right address again. And then I was laying in bed :D Finally!

First airport feeling

The drive to the airport in Düsseldorf and a dinner with a friend

Today I took the train from Utrecht to the airport in Düsseldorf. In the morning I had to work but in the afternoon my trip could start. Before I booked an airport hotel already, the Fashion Hotel - it fits to me :D But it is recommendable for everybody. It was super with comfortable and silent rooms and two restaurants (chinese and german), the staff was very kind and obliging ... I had a great time there :) And the Hotel isn't only cheap but also just 5 minutes with the bus away from the departure terminals. The bus stop is directly in front of the hotel.

After arrival I met a good friend, who has accidentially been in Düsseldorf that time. We have been in the chinese restaurant, which was good by the way :D After dinner we got some fortune cookies with a slogan. Mine was: A surprise is waiting for you. I am excited what kind of surprise that will be :D
It was a nice and funny evening, thanks to you Matze ;)

Tropical storm Karen

Nachrichten vorm Abflug
News before the flight

You could think if you choose the dryest month of the year to fly to New Orleans, that there is a break in the hurricane season and you don't need to expect something like this. The news which I get right now are everything but not positive! Friday evening local time when I will arrive, tropical storm Karen shall arrive too..... with the center right over New Orleans. What an excitment! I didn't experience something like that before and I don't know if I even want to .... But if the storm reallycomes, maybe my flight from Nashville to New Orleans doesn't go ... Let's see!

Umzug ist endlich vorbei/Moving is finally over

Der Umzug ist geschafft! Endlich!
The moving is done! Finally!

All walls are colored, all furniture is in the right place, almost every picture hangs at the wall! Now the time of enjoying comes :) Finally a time where I don't need to do something small every evening, like shorten curtains, hanging pictures at the wall and so on :D

But from the beginning: July 31st my friend and new roommate Eliane got an announcment for an appartment in an email in facebook from a friend of her. We had to react the same day! So I called and made an appointment to see that appartment the same day. As I heard the address I already thought, uuuhhh that's not in our favorite district .... if this is good? But the rest sounded great, 2 big sleeping rooms, 1 living room, kitchen, bathrooom and an unbeatable price (you remember my last blog over the search of flats in Utrecht please!) .... I was going to this appartment.

My first impression of the building was just ... oje .... what an ugly big bunker :D The building has 7 floors and I don't know how many flats. But positive was the location marginal of this not popular district. We don't need to cycle through and it is directly at the station Overvecht, very conviently located to transport connections like trains and busses. We just need to test if we can hear the trains in the appartment.

The girl who lived in the flat until now was already waiting for me. She gave me a tour. The appartment was very spacious and light, actually ideal for us. Just the kitchen distressed me. It was very old looking, just had a small gas stove without oven and there was no fridge. The washing mashine we could get at that time. But well, here we will find a remedy. :) One of the rooms has been very dark and was also very battered ... in total we would have to do a lot, but at least the ground floor will stay inside, a nice brown laminate.

I called Eliane to tell her about the flat, sended her some pictures and in no time we accepted :) First just with the hidden agenda that we just take it for a transition time because it is cheap and we will search further.

A few days later I signed the rental contract at the housing corporation, got to read a few terms and conditions about the flat and we could already prepare ourselves that we will move end of august. Eliane has been still on vacation and will not arrive home again till one week before the moving.

The week before the moving we finally got our keys and we could start to renovate .... because we couldn't let that appartment like it was to move in. Then we wouldn't feel good :) In the meantime we already came to a compromise who will get which room and everyone could furnish their room on a papersheet. :)

Da brauchen wir also auch was neues.

I just can tell that we did a lot! Eliane still had free time and she was almost every day from morning to evening in our new flat to work there. I always joined the evenings after work. But we painted really everything: All walls and ceilings in the sleeping rooms, the whole corridor, the kitchen, the toilet, the living room .... really everything! The more we painted the more beautiful and homelike it got :) Afterwards we had to clean everything and that was no bed of roses ... only kitchen and bathroom almost haven't been usable at all! But upon finishing the kitchen it looked very nice ... not so old and raunchy anymore :) And now we got the message that the washing mashine won't stay in this appartment. So we need a new one too.

The day before moving we made a handover certificate with the caretaker of the house and even the girl who was living in this flat before was astonished what we have done. In the evening Eliane and I packed a car full with stuff of mine which I brought to the new flat directly. A second full car I parked in front of my door the night and brought it to the new flat the next morning. Fortunately I could use the company car of my boss and we could save some money. Saturday august 24th in the morning we started. We cleaned up the rest in the new flat and prepared everything for the new furniture. Then we met in front of my flat and started to remove everything from my room. Friends were coming step by step and helped us. Then we parted us. A part went to Eliane's appartment, another part to our new flat. At the new flat we unpacked the car and I drove to Eliane's appartment. Luckily everything of Eliane's stuff fitted in this and a friend's car (Thanks at this point to you, Uli! Without your car we had to drive twice! ;) ). In no time the stuff has been in the new flat. After only 3 hours the moving from 2 different appartments to just one common flat was done! Record I think :) Thanks to all helpers! A housewarming party is still following for you!

But then another difficult part came to us ..... our monster shop at IKEA! I had doubts if everything will fit in the car but it had to :D First everyone of us took one cart and packed them full .... then we realized that there is still a whole cupboard with several boxes missing. Here we really had doubts if everything will fit in the car .... the 4 carts were looking massive! So we paid first and brought the stuff to the car. And after loading the first big parts we decided to get the missing cupboard after all.... poor Eliane had to wait at the car with the rest. But loading the rest was done very fast :D

On the way back home we had to drive veeeeeryyyy slowly .... the backdoor wasn't closed at all because the boxes had been too long and because of the weight of the stuff the car was a little bit pushed down athe back. But with a little bit more time we arrived safe at home :D

The two guys who helped us said good buy at that point, THANKS GEORGE and ULI!!! You were helping us really phat and you had a lot of patience at IKEA ;)

Afterwards we started to unpack and build our stuff. Everyone was busy in their room and tried at least to prepare everything for the night. I build up my bed in solid 3 hours that evening! But afterwards it was ready and I was tired :D Sunday was a bulding up day too, there were enough cupboards needed to be built up. In the afternoon we went to a second hand shop for electric stuff and bougth a used washing mashine which was delivered the next day already. Eliane organized a fridge from Switzerland which will arrive end of september. In the meantime we used a small camping fridge. it was a busy weekend.

In the course of the next 2 weeks we did a lot of small things in the evenings. Smaller stuff was built up, first pictures were hanged at the walls ... decorating... :) what women love to do ;) Besides we found great chairs and a dining table, Eliane found a nice big stove in the Kringloopwinkel and all of our papertrash (IKEA boxes) vanished from our balcony step by step. With this stuff you must figth at the end .... it wasn't little! Our balcony was full with empty boxes up to the top of the balustrade! The bathroom we painted with an anti-fungi color to let it shine in white again and other small stuff. :)

And then the weekend came when the brother of Eliane visited us together with a friend to bring the long desired big fridge and some longed stuff from Eliane :) The rest of the pictures were hanged to the walls and Eliane got the rest of her furniture. Finally the appartment was complete :)

And now is the time for enjoying :) I am looking forward to live with you together Eliane ;)

My new roommate Dobby

Ein neuer Mitbewohner :)
A new roommate :)

Sometimes you make decisions very shortly and spontaneous which can change your life afterwards. In this case it was ... just moved in another flat and still not totally furnished, I decided to buy a cat ... better said the small 12 weeks old male cat Dobby. And I don't regret it. This small ball of wool keeps me on my toes but gives me also very beautiful moments. Especially when they are still so small and clumsy, there are very often moments to smile ;) Conclusion: he is so cute although sometimes very hyperactive and cheeky :D
